The Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer Index was released on Tuesday, and a better outlook for the future from farmers pushed the barometer higher. The index climbed to 139 in November, 10 points higher than in October and the highest reading since June of this year.

The November survey again asked corn producers about what adjustments to their production practices they anticipate making in 2026 with expected weak operating margins. The top two production practices producers said they will consider changing are shifting to lower-cost seed traits or varieties and reducing applications of phosphorus fertilizer.

After those top two choices, farmers said they might consider reducing corn seeding rates and lowering nitrogen application rates.

“Still, a large minority of farmers (40%) said they don’t plan to make any changes to their corn production practices in 2026,” the report stated.

The Dec. 2 edition of the Ag Economy Barometer Index can be found at https://ag.purdue.edu/commercialag/ageconomybarometer/better-outlook-for-the-future-pushes-farmer-sentiment-higher/.

All eight fertilizers are now higher in price compared to one year earlier: 10-34-0 by 9%, potash 11%, MAP 14%, urea 19%, anhydrous 21%, DAP 25%, UAN32 28% and UAN28 29%.

DTN gathers fertilizer price bids from agriculture retailers each week to compile the DTN Fertilizer Index. DTN first began reporting data in November 2008.
