MINNEAPOLIS (DTN) — The DTN price for domestic distillers dried grains (DDG) from 33 locations reporting for the week ended Aug. 29 was unchanged on average at $140 per ton versus one week ago. DDG prices overall were mixed but prices were steady for the week on average. Weekly plant production was lower and the cash corn price was firm for the week. The DTN National Average Corn Index was up $3 versus one week ago.

Export DDGS are finding support from higher barge freight and the low water issues in the lower Mississippi River, causing barge drafts to be cut. Traffic is moving slower as dredges are busy working to keep the channels open, especially near Memphis where barge groundings have been happening. Water levels at Memphis are currently at minus 5.24 feet below zero gauge.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported overall ethanol production in the United States averaged 1.071 million barrels per day (bpd) in the week ended Aug. 23, down 27,000 bpd, week-on-week, while 64,000 bpd, or 6%, higher than in the same week last year. Four-week average output at 1.077 million bpd was 40,000 bpd above the same four weeks last year. Midwest ethanol production averaged 1.012 million bpd, down 26,000 bpd week-on-week and 60,000 bpd, or 5.9%, higher than in the same week last year. Four-week average output at 1.018 million bpd was 38,000 bpd above the same four weeks last year.

Based on the average of prices collected by DTN, the value of DDG relative to corn for the week ended Aug. 29 was 1.05%. The value of DDG relative to soybean meal was 45.37 and the cost per unit of protein for DDG was $5.19 compared to the cost per unit of protein for soybean meal at $6.50.
