DTN Retail Fertilizer Trends

Five Fertilizers Lead Nutrient Prices Higher Again

Fertilizer prices continued to be mostly higher for the first week of December 2025. Five of the eight major fertilizers were higher in price compared to last month while the other three were slightly less expensive for the second week in a row. No fertilizers had a significant price move, which DTN designates as anything 5% or more.

The average retail price of potash during the first week of December 2025 was $489/ton. Potash is now 11% more expensive than it was a year ago. (DTN chart)

OMAHA (DTN) — Retail fertilizer prices tracked by DTN for the first week of December 2025 continue to show most are slightly higher.

For the second week in a row, five fertilizers were higher once again while the remaining three were a little lower. No fertilizers had considerable price moves. DTN designates a significant move as anything 5% or more.

The five nutrients higher are potash, which had an average price of $489/ton, 10-34-0 $667/ton, anhydrous $865/ton, UAN28 $414/ton and UAN32 $465/ton.

Three fertilizers were slightly lower looking back to the prior month. DAP had an average price of $916/ton, MAP $921/ton and urea $586/ton.

On a price per pound of nitrogen basis, the average urea price was $0.64/lb.N, anhydrous $0.53/lb.N, UAN28 $0.74/lb.N and UAN32 $0.73/lb.N.

President Donald Trump said Canadian fertilizer being exported south of the border could be hit with significant tariffs in the future, according to a CTV article. This would increase already higher fertilizer costs for U.S. farmers struggling with profitability. Trump made the comment while announcing a $12 billion agriculture aid package on Monday.

“A lot of it does come in from Canada, and so we’ll end up putting very severe tariffs on that, if we have to, because that’s the way you want to bolster it here and we can do it here,” Trump said.

Trump’s comments were not welcomed by the U.S. fertilizer industry. Veronica Nigh, senior economist for The Fertilizer Institute (TFI), said this topic has already been discussed in the past.

“It feels like we had to explain to the world how important Canadian reserves and exports of potash globally, and specifically to the U.S., were earlier this year when we were talking tariffs, and so of course this is not a welcome comment from the president,” Nigh said.

All eight fertilizers are now higher in price compared to one year earlier.

10-34-0 is 9% higher, potash is 11% more expensive, MAP is 13% higher, urea is 18% more expensive, anhydrous is 20% higher, DAP is 24% more expensive and both UAN32 and UAN28 are 28% higher looking back to last year.

DTN gathers fertilizer price bids from agriculture retailers each week to compile the DTN Fertilizer Index. DTN first began reporting data in November 2008.

In addition to national averages, MyDTN subscribers can access the full DTN Fertilizer Index, which includes state averages, here: https://www.mydtn.com/agriculture/web/ag/markets/fuels-fertilizers#!/fertilizers.

The Purdue University/CME Group Ag Barometer Index showed farmers have more optimism for their futures. You can read about here: https://www.dtnpf.com/agriculture/web/ag/crops/article/2025/12/03/5-fertilizers-higher-prices-month.
