Mid-Atlantic Energy Highlights

Above Normal Temperatures Continue

Widespread above normal temperatures remain dominant, with anomalies of 12-24 degrees expected.

General Overview: A POTENT STORM SYSTEM WILL BRING A VARIETY OF HAZARDOUS WEATHER ACROSS MUCH OF THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN UNITED STATES OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS.

EAST: An intense area of low pressure will track from the Central Plains into the Northeast, spreading heavy precipitation ahead of the cold front. Severe thunderstorms capable of damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes are possible from the Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic states on Thursday. As the system progresses eastward, heavy rain may lead to flooding concerns across the Northeast Thursday night into Friday. Behind the cold front, a swath of heavy snow is expected from the Upper Midwest into interior New England, with blizzard conditions possible in some areas. Freezing rain will also be a threat for parts of the interior Northeast.

Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Well above normal east of the Rockies, 6-12F above average
-Days 4-6: Cooler behind front, near to slightly below normal
-Days 7-10: Moderating back to above normal

CENTRAL: Thunderstorm chances ramp up Wednesday across the Southern Plains into the Lower Mississippi Valley, some of which could be severe with large hail and damaging winds. Heavy rainfall may also lead to flash flooding. As the storm system intensifies Thursday into Friday, a swath of heavy snow is expected from the Central Plains into the Upper Midwest, with blizzard conditions possible. Freezing rain will be a concern for parts of the Central Plains as well.

Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Well above normal, 6-12F above average
-Days 4-6: Sharply colder behind front, 6-12F below normal
-Days 7-10: Moderating but still slightly below normal

WEST: The storm system will bring precipitation chances to parts of the Intermountain West and Rockies, mainly in the form of mountain snow. However, the main impacts will be felt further east. Dry and warm conditions prevail across much of the West through the period.

Temperature Anomalies:
-Days 1-3: Above normal, 3-6F above average
-Days 4-6: Slightly cooler but still above normal
-Days 7-10: Continuing above normal temperatures

TROPICAL: No tropical cyclone activity is expected across the Atlantic, Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico during the next 7 days.
