Baker Huges: North America Rig Count Rises by 7

Baker Hughes data released this week show North America’s active drilling rig count increased by seven to 725 rigs for the week ending September 12, lifted by gains in both the United States and Canada.

U.S. rigs climbed by two to 539, as land rigs increased by two to 524 while inland waters and offshore rigs remained unchanged at 2 and 13, respectively. The total U.S. rig count remains 51 rigs below last year levels.

Canadian rigs rose by five to 186. Despite the gain, the count is down by 32 rigs from the same week last year. Gulf of Mexico rigs were unchanged at 10, holding 9 rigs lower compared to last year.

Oil rigs in the U.S. rose by two to 416 while gas rigs held steady at 118. Miscellaneous rigs were unchanged at 5. Among trajectory types, directional rigs rose by 2 to 56, horizontal rigs increased by 1 to 471, and vertical rigs declined by 1 to 12.

In Canada, oil rigs climbed by three to 126 and gas rigs rose by one to 59. Compared to last year, Canadian oil rigs are down by 24 while gas rigs are off by 8.

 

AAR: Petroleum Carloads Drop 7.1% Week Ending Sept. 6

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) data show petroleum and petroleum product carloads totaled 10,014 in the week ending September 6, down by 7.1% from the same week in 2024.

Year to date, petroleum and petroleum products carloads totaled 360,882, down by 0.9% in the corresponding period of the prior year, AAR reported this week.

AAR reports total U.S. weekly rail traffic was 467,880 carloads and intermodal units in the week profiled, down by 2.4% compared with the same week last year. Total carloads for the week-ended September 6 reached 214,383, down by 3.5% compared to the same week last year, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 253,497 containers and trailers, a 1.4% decrease from 2024.

For the first 36 weeks of 2025, U.S. railroads reported cumulative volume of 7,963,526 carloads, up by 2.4% compared to the same period last year, and 9,724,964 intermodal units, up by 4.2% compared to last year. Total combined U.S. traffic for the first 36 weeks of 2025 was 17,688,490 carloads and intermodal units, reflecting a 3.3% increase compared to last year.
