Elaine Shein

Elaine Shein, DTN's associate managing editor, is responsible for editing DTN feature articles and series, as well as providing oversight on special projects. She also is responsible for news content on the DTN's Canada site, and helps coordinate DTN's social media postings. Shein hosts DTN's Reporter's Notebook video and also helps host DTN's other daily videos, including the Market Weather Outlook, Hot Sheet and Closing Grain Market Comments.Prior to joining DTN, Shein worked as a reporter for The Regina Leader-Post daily newspaper in Canada, as well as for Gemini News Service in London, England. She has spent almost three decades covering agriculture in the United States and Canada, including serving as editor and deputy publisher of The Western Producer in Western Canada, and served in publisher and executive editor positions for the Capital Press agriculture weekly in the U.S. Pacific Northwest region.Shein has received awards for writing, photography, video, multimedia and social media work individually and as a team from organizations such as the North American Agricultural Journalists association (NAAJ), Canadian Farm Writers' Federation (CFWF), the American Agricultural Editors' Association (including the Master Writer award), and the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists. In 2007, she was part of a team that won a Grantham Prize Award of Special Merit for environmental reporting on climate change. She has won the prestigious ABM Jesse H. Neal award twice, as well as been a finalist several times.In 2015-2016, Shein is the president of the American Agricultural Editors' Association (2015-2016), and she is also a past president of the Canadian Farm Writers' Federation. She has also been on the executive of the North American Agricultural Journalists association, the Canadian Association of Journalists, the Agri-Business Council of Oregon, and Oregon's Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation.Shein earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Regina and another bachelor's degree from the University of Saskatchewan.Shein has farming experience from growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan where she helped raise cattle and grow crops. Her family remains active in farming.
